Richmond, CA Activists meet Bhopal Survivors

On May 26, in the shadow of Chevron’s Richmond Refinery, survivors of the Union Carbide toxic disaster in Bhopal, India met with Richmond residents from the Laotian and African American communities. The People’s Health Movement (PHM-US) and Hesperian brought these geographically distant groups together to share experiences around their closely related struggles for health and justice against corporate pollution.

Governments at the World Health Organisation have failed to agree on a framework that guarantees affected countries access to affordable anti-virals and vaccines during a pandemic, and access to the technology and know-how needed to build research, development and production capacity.

“To promote the spirit of Alma Ata, conditions are better than ever”

The 30th anniversary of the 1978 Alma Ata Declaration was marked by a celebration in Brussels on October 17, 2008. During the program, two PHM activists were interviewed on the significance of Alma Ata and the way forward in the struggle for the right to health. Here are some excerpts from this interview with Arturo Quizhpe from Ecuador and Wim De Ceukelaire from Belgium.

The Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA) is the country circle of the Global People’s Health Movement (www.phmovement.org). It was formed in the year 2000 when several national networks collectively organised the first Jan Swasthya Sabha during which over 2000 participants adopted the Indian Peoples Health Charter and launched the JSA to work towards achieving health for all and for equity in health.
